  • Dexter Dreads Volleyball Club

    Join us for an introductory short season of volleyball. If your child has never played the sport, this would be a great time to try it! We will practice 2x a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) from 6:30-8 starting January 8th. We will have four tournaments, and they'll run *every other weekend (two Sundays and two Saturdays). Tournaments will be local and within an hour or so, usually running form 8-9am until 2-4pm. Our final tournament should be March 9.* This team is designed for the new player to learn the game of volleyball while practicing and competing alongside her friends and classmates. Fifth and sixth graders welcome (must be born after on or after July 1, 2011). Players will learn the rules of the game, introductory game strategy as well as basic skills (passing, setting, serving, hitting and defense). We'll also stress sportsmanship, hard work, and what it means to be a good teammate as we develop their skills. The team will be coached by Dexter Varsity Volleyball Head Coach Erin Penn. If there is interest there is a possibility to run an extended season for interested players through April and May. *This could possibly change as we are currently waiting on our tournament registration confirmations. We are hoping three will be in Saline and one in Jackson.* Register for the waitlist and Coach Penn will be in touch regarding tryouts. Final fee will be determined when team is formed - will be approximately $200

  • Field Hockey - Spring

    Discover the exciting world of field hockey with Dexter Community Education's comprehensive programs designed for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. Our courses focus on fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting, and team concepts. Parents are responsible for providing a stick, shin guards and mouthguard for practice and games. Sticks and shin guards can be provided for new players on a short-term basis. 2nd to 4th graders: program includes weekday practices and inter-squad games on Saturdays during the spring. Additionally, 3rd and 4th graders have the option to participate in weekend games during the fall/spring league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed. 5th and 6th graders: program offers spring travel teams with one practice in Dexter and weekend games in the league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed (times TBD). Information is coming regarding 7th and 8th graders, our spring Community Ed travel team features one practice and one weekend game in the league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed. Our programs are led by a dedicated team of coaches, including former collegiate athletes, parents, DHS alumni, and current DHS Field Hockey student-athletes. We prioritize creating a fun environment with positive role modeling, team building, and skill instruction for all levels, regardless of ability.     Club Volleyball offers an exciting opportunity for students to dive into the competitive world of volleyball. Season: Spring (March - May) Schedule: Practices - start Monday March 11 - Monday-Thursday 6p-7:30p Games - Wednesdays starting in April for five weeks (5p, 6p, 7p game times) April 10 - Belleville April 17 - Saline April 24 - Jackson NW May 1 - Adrian May 8 - Jackson NW Transportation to games will not be provided.     Kidokinetics provides youth athletic enrichment for kids by introducing over 20 sports and creative activities to foster movement that supports gross motor skill development. About This Program: Sports Play provides a fun introduction to sports designed to help kids get moving and build confidence! Each week features a warmup, an introduction to a new sport (example: kickball, basketball, scoops, badminton, ninja style courses, etc.), an athletic activity, a cool down, and an age-appropriate anatomy and physiology lesson. **NEW*** Parent and Me Classes: An engaging class for both parents/caregivers and the child to learn, play and fun together.
  • Lacrosse - Middle School Girls

    Lacrosse Middle School Girls grades 5-8 is offered through the Community Ed department and is aligned with the athlete development model of nationally sanctioned US Lacrosse. Players will develop the fundamental skills of girls lacrosse and competitive game play. Practice format includes skills session followed by small game play and half field scrimmages. Players must provide their own equipment: goggles, stick, cleats and mouthguard. There are limited sticks available for those who do not have one or wish to demo before buying one. Spring 2024: Separate registration/practices offered on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. If your student will practice both days, they should be registered for both sections. There's a $25 discount on each section if you register for both practice days. In addition to the practices, we are planning to play 6-8 games with as many as five potential home games.   • Michigan Thunder Soccer Academy

    Professional coaching coordinated by Michigan Thunder FC Director of Academy, Sean Myint Little Bolts ages 3-5. Our Little Bolts program aims to develop soccer specific skills such as basic motor skills, balance, coordination, foot-eye coordination, and ball skills. Little Bolts build strong fundamental foundations for physical skills, teamwork and inspires confidence at a young age in a successful atmosphere where learning is fun. It also gives the players the opportunity to play soccer, learn new skills and have an enjoyable sporting experience all while making new friends. A professional coaching staff will deliver this high-energy experience. Our goal is to provide a perfect introduction to the game of soccer while focusing on independence and enhancing your child’s overall growth and well being. You will see happy, confident children who are eager to learn and come back for more. In the fall, winter and spring, Little Bolts meet on Saturdays, 9-9:45am. Five year olds have the option of registering for Little Bolts or Strikers. If you're unsure as to which program is best for your participant, we suggest you register for Little Bolts and talk with the coaches at the conclusion of the first practice. Strikers ages 5 -10. Our Thunder Strikers program is designed to support and guide emerging young soccer players and parents into a formalized, structured and developmental soccer environment. The goal is to provide technical training for ALL players who have a strong desire to develop their technical skill level, increase their knowledge and foster a love for the game of soccer. The training will focus on developing technical skills including first touch, dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and attacking moves. The Thunder Strikers program places a strong emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship and the skills that are vital components of competitive soccer and transferable skills to life. In the fall, winter and spring, the Thunder Strikers program usually includes one weekday evening practice and a Saturday program, between 10am and noon. What to Bring: Wear shin guards, sneakers or soccer shoes (during outdoor season), bring a water bottle and a size 3 or 4 soccer ball to all sessions. Soccer Shirts: You have the option of purchasing a Michigan Thunder FC t-shirt. MI Thunder partners with DCE to coordinate our youth soccer program. Youth soccer participants are often invited to support the DHS soccer programs on Senior Night or on other special occasions. Wearing the MI Thunder soccer shirt gets the student into the game at no charge. Spring 2024: Little Bolts will continue to meet on Saturdays only. Striker training sessions will be on Tuesdays or Thursdays with in-house games on Saturdays between 10am and noon.   • Running Club

    The purpose of the Running Club is to help students increase their overall fitness and endurance through the sport of distance running. The program is offered in the fall, spring and summer. Coaches use group games and running-related activities to promote the sport and encourage students to push themselves in a positive environment, while working on fitness and endurance. Open to all and tailored to everyone’s ability level. Participants typically run rain or shine. Kalli and Corey Nowitzke lead the program in the fall and spring. Tom Mikesell leads the program in the summer. Spring 2024: We're offering Running Club on Mondays and/or Thursdays. You may sign up for either or both sessions. Everyone will meet at 3:15 at the Field of Champions behind Wylie for check-in and stretching before moving to Bates Field behind Bates School. The 5th/6th graders are encouraged to ride the bus to the bus hub. A Running Club t-shirt is included with the program this spring. Since this is an after school program, we typically need one volunteer to help check attendance each day. You may indicate your willingness to volunteer during the registration process. The Program Coordinator will contact the first 1-2 who indicate interest in volunteering.   • Youth Tennis

    Beginners and almost-intermediate level players will learn the rules of the game and develop the basic strokes using drills and games in a fun-filled atmosphere. Each class will include warm up, skill development and games. Bring your racquet and a water bottle. If possible, players may be divided by ability. When sections fill, please join the waitlist. There's no cost to go onto the waitlist and a moderate waitlist may create additional sections.
