    This course will provide you with the info necessary to safely operate a variety of boats and personal watercraft (PWC). Learn navigation rules, boat & PWC operation, maintenance and specific laws & regulations to legally operate watercraft in Michigan. Upon successful completion you will receive a State of MI Boater’s Safety Certificate required for legal operation of any type of personal watercraft (including jet skis) for all persons born after 12/31/1978. Persons under 14 years of age may not legally operate a PWC. Based on feedback from previous participants, participants should be at least 12 years of age. Bring lunch, drinks & snack. Important: In addition to registering here on the Community Ed platform, the DNR is asking you to register on their site as well in order to receive credit for your certification.

    Kids spend their young years playing with LEGO® Bricks, stacking the blocks together to create an immersive world. Bricks4Kidz takes this one step further with our LEGO®-Inspired after school classes and summer camp programs. These activities deliver play that’s fun, educational and enriching for each child. We use guided instructions with the students as they build a project and see their vision come to life. Classes at Anchor or Beacon are open to students from either school, however students must be able to get to the after school class location on their own. Parents may want to walk their student to the location before the first day of class. Note: After school classes at Bates begin at 3:30 and are open to any student. However, parents of students not registered for After Care are responsible for drop off and pick up at Bates. Spring 2024 -"Air, Land, and Sea" Model builds will be from how we get around on all three!
  • Canine Companion Dog Training

    The Canine Companion training philosophy is: dogs learn through experience, punishment training is dangerous, there are better options and reinforcement drives behavior. The only way to truly facilitate lasting behavioral change and rewire the way your dog thinks is through positive reinforcement. Force free, reward based trainers have put in the work, done the research, and will take the time to get to know your dog's individual learning style to keep everyone safe and help your dog learn. Doggy Life Skills - The material covered in this class will be outside of your typical obedience training and feature behaviors that have a variety of real-life applications. This training is meant to prepare you and your dog to tackle things like vet visits and problem behaviors by building both of your skill sets and confidence. With a focus on proactive training, the goal is to foster mutual connection between person and dog and create adaptable dogs that are willing participants in their environments. This course is open to dogs of any age and training level, so long as they can be comfortable in a group class setting. Canine Good Citizen Prep - A group class for dogs who are generally well mannered but need some obedience refinement. We will cover the ten topics on the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test with the option to test for the title during the final class. Five classes with an optional make up on the 6th week. STAR Puppy - Socialization and early learning for puppies under a year old. All puppies MUST have all puppy shots prior to the class. This group class follows the AKC STAR Puppy guidelines and is perfect for first-time puppy owners. Everyone completing the 6 weeks program earns the STAR Puppy title. Six classes with an optional make up on the 7th week. Trick Dog - This group class is all about having fun and learning with your dog. Choose from a variety of tricks and beginner agility behaviors to work on and practice in a safe, fenced outdoor space under the guidance of a professional trainer. Leash Manners Seminar - One group class to learn how best to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash. Dog-Friendly Kid Seminar - One group class for the whole family to learn more about how dogs communicate and encourage a more dog-aware generation of kids. Puppy Play and Body Language Seminar - One group class for puppies 6 months and younger, to play under the supervision of their owners and a trainer and discuss dog body language and appropriate play.
  • Chess Scholars

    Develop your child's intellect through the royal game of chess! Current research has shown a strong link between chess and academic performance in a variety of areas, including mathematics and language arts. Chess has been proven to enhance children's motivation, concentration, focus, social skills, and creativity. Each day will consist of a fun, interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both beginner and experienced players are welcome and will learn under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach.
  • Child and Babysitter Safety

    The class is the American Red Cross' babysitter's training – and will prepare you to become one of the most capable, trusted and in-demand sitters in your neighborhood. Babysitter training manual, DVD and certificate of completion included in class fee. Class topics include leadership, safety, basic care, first aid and professionalism. To enroll, students must be at least 11 years old by class start date and must attend all hours to receive the certification. Students may bring snacks and water bottle to class. During the school year, the class typically includes boys and girls, grades 5-8 and is located at either Mill Creek or Creekside. The Coordinator and instructor are aware of the different end times at the schools and will accommodate students arriving late from a building with a later dismissal time.
  • Dexter Dreads Volleyball Club

    Join us for an introductory short season of volleyball. If your child has never played the sport, this would be a great time to try it! We will practice 2x a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) from 6:30-8 starting January 8th. We will have four tournaments, and they'll run *every other weekend (two Sundays and two Saturdays). Tournaments will be local and within an hour or so, usually running form 8-9am until 2-4pm. Our final tournament should be March 9.* This team is designed for the new player to learn the game of volleyball while practicing and competing alongside her friends and classmates. Fifth and sixth graders welcome (must be born after on or after July 1, 2011). Players will learn the rules of the game, introductory game strategy as well as basic skills (passing, setting, serving, hitting and defense). We'll also stress sportsmanship, hard work, and what it means to be a good teammate as we develop their skills. The team will be coached by Dexter Varsity Volleyball Head Coach Erin Penn. If there is interest there is a possibility to run an extended season for interested players through April and May. *This could possibly change as we are currently waiting on our tournament registration confirmations. We are hoping three will be in Saline and one in Jackson.* Register for the waitlist and Coach Penn will be in touch regarding tryouts. Final fee will be determined when team is formed - will be approximately $200

  • Field Hockey - Spring

    Discover the exciting world of field hockey with Dexter Community Education's comprehensive programs designed for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. Our courses focus on fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting, and team concepts. Parents are responsible for providing a stick, shin guards and mouthguard for practice and games. Sticks and shin guards can be provided for new players on a short-term basis. 2nd to 4th graders: program includes weekday practices and inter-squad games on Saturdays during the spring. Additionally, 3rd and 4th graders have the option to participate in weekend games during the fall/spring league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed. 5th and 6th graders: program offers spring travel teams with one practice in Dexter and weekend games in the league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed (times TBD). Information is coming regarding 7th and 8th graders, our spring Community Ed travel team features one practice and one weekend game in the league managed by Ann Arbor Rec & Ed. Our programs are led by a dedicated team of coaches, including former collegiate athletes, parents, DHS alumni, and current DHS Field Hockey student-athletes. We prioritize creating a fun environment with positive role modeling, team building, and skill instruction for all levels, regardless of ability. This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Since this class is being held online with ZOOM, you will be able to sit at home with your guitar and take this class without any pressure at all. And since the class includes an online book and online follow-up video lessons, you will be able to continue your practice and study on your own. An optional periodic online question and answer session is also included. A recording of the class is included as well. Class limited to 15 students. For ages 13+.     Kidokinetics provides youth athletic enrichment for kids by introducing over 20 sports and creative activities to foster movement that supports gross motor skill development. About This Program: Sports Play provides a fun introduction to sports designed to help kids get moving and build confidence! Each week features a warmup, an introduction to a new sport (example: kickball, basketball, scoops, badminton, ninja style courses, etc.), an athletic activity, a cool down, and an age-appropriate anatomy and physiology lesson. **NEW*** Parent and Me Classes: An engaging class for both parents/caregivers and the child to learn, play and fun together.
  • Lacrosse - Middle School Girls

    Lacrosse Middle School Girls grades 5-8 is offered through the Community Ed department and is aligned with the athlete development model of nationally sanctioned US Lacrosse. Players will develop the fundamental skills of girls lacrosse and competitive game play. Practice format includes skills session followed by small game play and half field scrimmages. Players must provide their own equipment: goggles, stick, cleats and mouthguard. There are limited sticks available for those who do not have one or wish to demo before buying one. Spring 2024: Separate registration/practices offered on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. If your student will practice both days, they should be registered for both sections. There's a $25 discount on each section if you register for both practice days. In addition to the practices, we are planning to play 6-8 games with as many as five potential home games.   • Little Piranha Swim Lessons

    Little Piranha Swim Lessons In partnership with Dexter Community Aquatic Club - for ages 3 & up. Dive into the world of aquatic adventure with our Little Piranha Swim Lessons, designed to introduce young learners to the joys and skills of swimming in a safe and supportive environment. Our program is structured into four progressive levels, catering to children of varying abilities and comfort levels in the water: Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Intermediate, and Advanced. Indicate your swimmer's level during registration; if you have not participated in swim lessons with us before, please select that option. ALL NEW SWIMMERS SHOULD ATTEND EVALUATIONS. Evaluation day will be held on Friday March 29th from 6-8pm at Wylie. Anyone who cannot make evaluation day will be able to register but will only be allowed to sign up for Little Piranha Beginner 1. BEGINNER: Students in this group will learn how to be safe and comfortable in the water. They will learn how to put their face in the water as well as floating on their back. They will learn to move through the water on their stomach and their back. They will also learn how to roll from their stomach to their back and back to their stomach. Skills taught: Floating on back, Flying fish (arm flaps on back), Swimming to the bottom, Puppy paddles, Comfort in water, Safety swim back to wall (from a jump), Piranha rolls (rolling from stomach to back then back to stomach), Face in water for 5 piranha INTERMEDIATE: Swimmers in this group will start to learn how to swim a very basic freestyle stroke. Working on becoming more confident on flipping from the stomach to their back and working their way towards a side breath. They will also be introduced to the breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke arms. Skills taught: Freestyle arms, Side Breath, Butterfly Arms, Diving from a sit, Breaststroke arms ADVANCED: Swimmers in this group will start to learn the tools and skills of the competitive strokes. Swimmers in this group will work towards putting the strokes together and understanding how they fit. They will understand the basics of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. They will work towards swimming 25 of each stroke. Swimmers who complete this level will automatically qualify for DCAC’s Bronze group with an opportunity to evaluate into silver right away. “We had been doing swim lessons through a franchise for a few years and we were looking for something different. We were excited to see DCAC was offering swim lessons and decided to give it a try. We like that they were flexible and personalized to different abilities. Another bonus was that lessons were taught by DCAC swimmers, and the coaches were also involved and provided encouragement.     Mad Science delivers interactive, hands-on science experiences through virtual programs, traditional after-school programs and summer camps. The after school programs are the perfect break between school and homework and their innovative programs are as entertaining as they are educational! Classes offered at Anchor or Beacon may include students from both schools. Teachers and paraprofessionals often help students find the class on the first day, but afterwards students are expected to go to the after school class by themselves. You may want to practice getting from their classroom to a class location in another building. No refunds within 7 days of classes or camps begining. Note: After school classes at Bates are open to any student. However, parents of students not registered for After Care are responsible for drop off and pick up at Bates. Spring 2024 - Ready, STEM, Go! In this program, children learn foundational science and find out how STEM is at work in the world around them! They learn about the animal kingdom, both on land and under the sea. They make mixtures and explore the science of motion and energy. They also discover the technology that powers our modern world.
  • Michigan Thunder Soccer Academy

    Professional coaching coordinated by Michigan Thunder FC Director of Academy, Sean Myint Little Bolts ages 3-5. Our Little Bolts program aims to develop soccer specific skills such as basic motor skills, balance, coordination, foot-eye coordination, and ball skills. Little Bolts build strong fundamental foundations for physical skills, teamwork and inspires confidence at a young age in a successful atmosphere where learning is fun. It also gives the players the opportunity to play soccer, learn new skills and have an enjoyable sporting experience all while making new friends. A professional coaching staff will deliver this high-energy experience. Our goal is to provide a perfect introduction to the game of soccer while focusing on independence and enhancing your child’s overall growth and well being. You will see happy, confident children who are eager to learn and come back for more. In the fall, winter and spring, Little Bolts meet on Saturdays, 9-9:45am. Five year olds have the option of registering for Little Bolts or Strikers. If you're unsure as to which program is best for your participant, we suggest you register for Little Bolts and talk with the coaches at the conclusion of the first practice. Strikers ages 5 -10. Our Thunder Strikers program is designed to support and guide emerging young soccer players and parents into a formalized, structured and developmental soccer environment. The goal is to provide technical training for ALL players who have a strong desire to develop their technical skill level, increase their knowledge and foster a love for the game of soccer. The training will focus on developing technical skills including first touch, dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and attacking moves. The Thunder Strikers program places a strong emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship and the skills that are vital components of competitive soccer and transferable skills to life. In the fall, winter and spring, the Thunder Strikers program usually includes one weekday evening practice and a Saturday program, between 10am and noon. What to Bring: Wear shin guards, sneakers or soccer shoes (during outdoor season), bring a water bottle and a size 3 or 4 soccer ball to all sessions. Soccer Shirts: You have the option of purchasing a Michigan Thunder FC t-shirt. MI Thunder partners with DCE to coordinate our youth soccer program. Youth soccer participants are often invited to support the DHS soccer programs on Senior Night or on other special occasions. Wearing the MI Thunder soccer shirt gets the student into the game at no charge. Spring 2024: Little Bolts will continue to meet on Saturdays only. Striker training sessions will be on Tuesdays or Thursdays with in-house games on Saturdays between 10am and noon.
