Our Community Education programming has engaging classes, fun teachers, and enriching experiences for all ages - after school, in the evenings, and on the weekends.

Behavior Guidelines

Please remember that participation in Community Education programs is voluntary. Students are expected to act respectfully throughout their participation. Community Education reserves the right to remove a student from a program at any time if they display inappropriate or unsafe behaviors.

Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to take the class you can request a refund. There will be a $5 deduction from any refunds except programs canceled by Community Ed.

Scholarships

Dexter Community Education offers Dexter School District families need-based scholarships for most of our programs. We offer one per child per catalog. Generally, students who qualify for free lunch through the schools qualify for a scholarship of up to $100 for one class per catalog; students who qualify for reduced lunch may be eligible for a partial scholarship. We may also offer scholarships for families with special circumstances on a case-by-case basis. We are not able to offer scholarships for programs that are not run by Community Education, nor for classes that do not meet minimum enrollments. All scholarships require the Director’s approval. If you register for a class using a scholarship and cancel less than one week prior to start date, you will forfeit your scholarship for that semester. Your signature on the application indicates that you have read and accept these policies. Once our office receives your application, we will confirm eligibility, but hold registration until the course meets minimum enrollment. Your “place in line” will be preserved. Once minimum enrollment is met, we will register your child and send you confirmation.

Elementary Science Olympiad

Elementary Science Olympiad is a competitive science team that offers a variety of team events designed to foster students’ interest in science. After registering for the program, students will have an opportunity to sign-up for an event via Sign-Up Genius and will then practice weekly with their event coach and teammates in a hands-on cooperative learning environment to gain expertise in their event. The program culminates in the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament in the spring which brings students together from 40 area schools. Practice times are set by the individual volunteer event coaches and vary depending on the event. An individual event could practice before school, after school or on weeknight evenings. The practice timesfor each event will be emailed to all registered participants before the event sign-up date. Event sign-up will occur on November 15th via SignUpGenius.com. Event practices will be up to the discretion of the event coach and will and continue once per week for about an hour until the Science Olympiad Tournament in spring 2025. This program relies on parent volunteer coaches and Dexter will only participate in events for which we have a volunteer coach. We are limited to 21 participants per grade with between 1 and 4 students in each event per grade. Coaching is a way to ensure your child can participate in his or her preferred event! Basketball - Men's

Welcome to our Men's Basketball league, where the spirit of the game thrives without the need for referees. We offer a basketball experience that emphasizes fair play, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. Must be 18yrs or older to participate. Here's what you can expect: Referee-Free Action: Our league operates on the honor system, with players responsible for making their own calls. This promotes a sense of integrity and self-regulation, fostering a respectful and friendly atmosphere on the court. Advance Registration: To ensure a smooth and organized game, we require all participants to register in advance. Competitive and Fun: Whether you're a seasoned basketball player or just looking to have some fun on the court, our league caters to all skill levels. Expect a healthy balance of competition and enjoyment. Camaraderie: Our league is not just about basketball; it's about building friendships and connections. After each game, players are encouraged to socialize and build lasting relationships, both on and off the court. Rules and Fair Play: While we don't have referees, we do have established rules and guidelines to ensure fair play. Players are expected to adhere to these rules and exhibit good sportsmanship throughout all sessions. Bring a basketball and a dark colored & light colored shirt each week. Minimum of 8 participants.

DCE Youth House Basketball

The Community Education house basketball program is a developmental activity designed to teach basic basketball skills to boys and girls, grades 1-6. Teams practice once a week and play six games on Saturdays, January - March. Practices are scheduled M-Th, typically beginning after 6p, with days/times determined by the coach's availability. Grades 1-2 play 4 on 4 with a rim lowered to 9.5 ft. All age groups play with an intermediate 28.5 size ball. Volunteer parent coaches are an important part of the program. If you're interested in coaching, you may indicate that during the registration process. We are unable to accommodate requests for teammates, specific teams/coaches. WHAT TEAM IS MY CHILD ON and/or WHO IS MY CHILD’S COACH? The draft held mid-December, and you should hear from your coach no later than December 20. WHEN WILL WE GET PRACTICE TIMES? Coaches pick practice time at the draft and communicate with you. WHEN WILL WE GET GAME SCHEDULE? Games are on Saturdays and the first day of games is January 20. Registrations are still coming which affects the number of teams at each division; because of this, the game schedule won’t be done until the week of January 8, and we aren’t able to provide estimates on what time on Saturday divisions are playing until we know how many teams. Everyone registered will be placed on a team. There are no practices scheduled during the holidays. Practices begin the week of January 6 and games start Saturday, January 25. Recently, grades 5 & 6 have played 8-10a, grades 3 & 4 have played 10a-1p and grades 1 & 2 from 1-3p, however game times each year are TBA, based on registration. Fees: $120/$130. Register before December 1 and a $15 discount will be applied automatically at checkout. New This Year: Reversible Jerseys We’re excited to announce that starting this year, we will be using reversible jerseys that can be reused year after year or even handed down to siblings. This year, there will be a one-time cost for the jersey ($25 and is part of your registration fee this year). In future seasons, you'll have the option to purchase jerseys separately if needed. This change will make things easier and more sustainable for our families! Conditioning for Winter Athletes

This program combines aerobic (cardiovascular) and anaerobic (high-intensity bursts) training to prepare athletes for the winter sports season. Each session alternates between training styles for balanced conditioning, helping athletes build stamina, strength, and overall fitness. Bonus: Each session is $75 but if you register your athlete for both sessions you will receive a $25 discount at checkout! The Dexter Dreads program aims to serve as a stepping stone between Little League and higher-level travel teams, offering a unique "travel lite" experience. Our primary objective is to keep our boys together while encouraging those who desire a more dedicated commitment and developmental experience beyond a traditional house league, such as Little League. However, we understand the importance of balancing these aspirations with the practicalities of time and financial constraints associated with higher-level programs.
